That's Shanghai takes a look at some of May's best F&B events:


May 9-12: Lickerland Dessert Take Over

Jason Licker knows a thing or two about pastry. The Iron Chef Thailand Pastry Edition champion and 2017 James Beard Award Nominee, Jason Licker, will be taking over Highline's afternoon tea from 2:30-5pm on May 9-11 and dinner desserts from 5:30-10:30pm on May 9-12.

At dinner you can choose from five different desserts at RMB88 each. Expect flavors such as matcha, black sesame and yuzu to make an appearance. Afternoon tea includes six special bites like Thai tea puffs, matcha 'oreos' and 'pop rock' lollipops plus tea or coffee for RMB148 per person.

May 11: Azul's 15 Year Anniversary Fiesta

As Eduardo Vargas quips, "Azul has been open since you were in high school." Go celebrate 15 years of delicious food at "Shanghai's favorite Latin American restaurant" and congratulate the team in person. This also marks a launch of a new menu of Peruvian, Spanish and Mexican-inspired dishes concoted by Eduardo Vargas, Executive Chef Oscar Beltran and new Chef de Cuisine Edgar Hernandez.

May 11: Boxing Cat Brew Cruise

Each year Boxing Cat Brewery celebrates Shanghai Beer Week in cooperation with other craft beer breweries with a 10 day festival of parties and city-wide events for lovers of craft beer. This year, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Boxing Cat Brewery, the festival is kicking off with a 400-person Brew Cruise on the Huangpu River. The two hour cruise party has free flow beers from five breweries: Boxing Cat Brewery, Goose Island, The BREW, Dr. Beer, and Shanghai Love Brewing Company. There will also be party snacks and serious sounds from top Shanghai DJs.

May 11-13:Beernanza

The fourth edition of Beernanza returns to Shanghai with three days of booze and music, including more than 150 Chinese and international craft beers. You can also expect a home brewing class, plus dozens of live Shanghai bands, including Skinny OG & Queen Diamond, JenSomeone, Elsa, Star Maiden Apocalypse and more.

May 12-13: Sweet & Salty Dessert Fest

Get ready for your ultimate cheat day ladies and gentlemen! Common Rare has officially partnered up Beijing's Woodstock of Eating to bring you the very first installment of "Sweet & Salty" dessert fest! We have gathered up to 50 independent brands that cover handcrafted and artisan goods to unique treats and savory deliciousness!

May 12: Barkyard Saturdays at The Rooster

Pooches are always welcome at The Rooster, but once a month they like to show  furry friends (and their owners) some extra love with free hot dogs (for you and your pooch), yummy doggy treats (for your pooch) and Brew Dog beer specials.

May 12: Charity Hot Dog Eating Contest at The Rooster

The Rooser will be hosting a Hot Dog Eating Contest for charity this Saturday at 5pm in support of Furry Friends and Rose’s Rescue. Of course there will be doggies, since it’s following their monthly Barkyard that same day, so from 3pm-5pm Pawsome will be serving yummy healthy treats for your pooches, and Furry Friends will be there with some cool swag for your best friends!

May 12: Shanghai Hot Sauce Festival

The Shanghai Hot Sauce Festival returns for its second year with a full day of events honoring all things spicy. Throw your hat in the ring if you think you make the best hot sauce in Shanghai or show off your taste buds of steel in the hot stuff eating competition. There will be a free flow chips for tasting all those tasty sauces plus spicy snacks and drink specials!

May 12: The White Night on the Bund

The White Night is going to be pretty big, and a bunch of places on the Bund are putting on some amazing events. No matter which of the elite venues you pick to start your night make sure to end with the Bar Rouge afterparty.

Dress in all white and book your dinner or drinks at Mr & Mrs Bund, GoodFellas, L' Atelier de Joel Robuchon, Hakkasan, el Willy, Chop Chop Club, Unico, Atto Primo, or La Bota, and enjoy white night specials. Each restaurant is offering a complimentary white drink, dessert, or a white night set menu for guests who book in advance. Entrance is free for guests dressed head to toe in white.

The White Night at el Willy

Shanghai's most famous landmark will celebrate a chic evening on May 12. They are going for all-white-everything on this extravagant night! Book your dinner  to enjoy a night of provocative tapas and cava popping for two hours long for just RMB400.

The White Night on The Bund, UNICO


On Sat May 12, The White Night on the Bund takes you to UNÏCO for a famous night of Electro Afro Latin Music to celebrate upbeat Tropical rhythms in white. If you're up for dressing up in all white for the night, you can enjoy free entry and a complimentary drink! Alternatively, give the password 'Coco' at the door before midnight for a free entry.

May 12: La Chouffe Party

Spring has sprung, gnomes are back and La Chouffe has never been so good! Le Cafe des Stagiaires at Found 158 is hosting this excellent event for only RMB30 per person, with a DJ set by Tofu.

May 17: Brews, Beats and Bites

Join the newly opened SH restaurant and bar combo Bird+Bitter for a fantastic, special beer paired menu! All night on May 17, Jing-A bottles will be RMB35 each. Expect groovy tunes, awesome service and tasty AF nibbles. They'll also be featuring a range of beer and specials deals, so don't miss out!

May 17: Three Chefs and a Wine Guy!

A one of kind dinner with three talented chefs. Willy Trullás Moreno (mastermind behind el Willy and Tomatito) and Alex Fargas (Hong Kong's Fofo by Willy, La Paloma) are in town for a six hands dinner with Shanghai's own, Koen Vessies (el Willy). Joining them is a Wine Guy, Julian Ruiz. The menu is an expression of the chefs' passion and craft, resulting in a nine course collaborative menu for guests to enjoy, while Mr. Julian will propose a choice of fine wines from Spain, specially selected for the menu. Come and have fun with these four 'grandes' joining forces for an incredible night.

May 18-20: Around the World with Chef Danyi, Korea

Each month, rising chef Danyi Gao hosts a supper club dinner inspired by her travels to 32 countries and counting. This month heads to Korea for a four-course meal featuring much more than the usual classics (and her own take on those). Dinner is from 6-10pm, and features live funk and soul to burn off the calories from 9.30pm-2am. Featured guest singer is Nancy Jenkinson Brown, a club favorite who only plays Shanghai once every month or two.

[Editor's Note: This event has been postponed until further notice due to weather forecast] Kate and Kimi's 5th birthday is here, and to celebrate they're hosting an artisan food market! They hope to serve the best and freshest seasonal foods, along with a vegan corner, kids activites and much more. Come join them May 20 for a fantastic afternoon!
